When family members or care providers become concerned that a child isn’t following a typical neurodevelopmental course, obtaining a comprehensive and accurate medical diagnosis is key — as early intervention is critical to long-term growth and development prospects, and an accurate diagnosis can significantly assist in acquiring appropriate, state-sponsored education and home-based support.

The medical diagnosis is made by a psychologist, neurodevelopmental pediatrician, or other specialized physician based on an assessment of developmental milestones, symptoms, cognitive and communications skills, diagnostic tests and more. A medical diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Disorder is most frequently based on the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (DSM-5) of the American Psychiatric Association. This manual guides physicians in diagnosing Autism Spectrum Disorder according to a specific set of criteria.

Please note: A brief observation in a single setting can’t present an accurate picture of someone’s abilities and behaviors. The person’s neurodevelopmental history and input from parents, caregivers and-or teachers are all important components of a correct diagnosis.
